Are you ready? It’s less than 11 days until the first ever kickoff of Georgia State University Football. This moment I personally have been working towards for over 400 days, while several of our central leaders have been working with this date in sight for over two years! Thousands of hours of planning, hundreds of hours of practice and preparation, multitudes of individuals coming together as one have all been leading up to this moment. So I ask… are you ready? Are you ready for the start of something great? Are you ready for the birth of a new tradition? Are you ready for Georgia State Football?

I’ll resume a look inside what it takes to pull off Game Day this week… but for today I’m relaxing after a night at the GSU Block Party!

While I know I promised to post about the Creative Process behind the Starting Lineup Videos, and trust me that will come soon enough, tonight was too good of a night to sit down and write a lengthy post about that! We had our first ever Night Scrimmage at the new Practice Fields which made for an amazing evening.

It was absolutely incredible seeing the sunset over the Georgia Dome casting long shadows and deep orange hues across the practice field… giving way to bright fluorescent lights illuminating the field and players. The night time city skyline in the background of intense on the field play was magical! This is College Football… This is Georgia State… This is History! September 2nd, Here We Come!

GSU Night Practice

While this post could be incredibly long and in-depth, tonight its going to be a brief look at what all the Video and Creative Services department does to get everything ready for Game Day Presentation. Our job, overall, is to fill all of the visual real estate with appealing and relevant videos, graphics and animations for the duration of the game. These elements must mesh with on the field promotions, game moments and crowd interactions.

I break down the elements we create into three  sections: Features; Crowd Prompts; Sponsorships.

Features
Features are the backbone of the in-game presentation from my department. An abbreviated list of these include:
All World GSU Look (meaning everything from the Jumbo Screen to the Ribbon Board is GSU)
Intro Video
In-House Commercials (Plugging other teams and functions)
Player Profiles
Public Address Graphics (Safety, Alcohol Sales etc.)
In-House Graphics (Website, Social Media, Television Show)
And a few other things up our sleeves….

Crowd Prompts
Crowd Interaction Graphics, Video and Animations. A quick list of these include:
Touchdown
First Down
Fourth Down
Sack
Get Loud
Stand Up
Go Panthers
etc…
We also produce pump up videos for in-game play.

Sponsorships
The “Bread and Butter” of our in-game presentation… yes, this is what pays the bills!
Sponsorships are a HUGE part of our In-Game Presentation, in fact something that warrants a post in and of itself, but to give you a brief description:
For most games we have a “Game Sponsor” who sponsors the entire game day experience. For this partner we will create All World (Meaning all visual spaces) looks, features such as Kick For Cash etc. and other in-game moments sponsored by them.
We produce a sponsorship reel for the message boards with all of our sponsors based on the amount of time they have purchased.
Several of our features are brought to you by… such as fan cams, races and other features.
As I said, this is a BIG segment, so something I’ll cover in more detail later!

Game Day Script - Blurred Out... Be There to see it Live!

The Script is the next vital part of any Game Day experience. Everything revolving around the production of the game is meticulously scripted out down to the very last detail. While the general script stays the same; Pre-Game, Quarters, Half Time and Ending- It’s fleshing out those pieces that we spend hours upon hours planning. For the past few nights we have had our core staff meet in planning sessions where we break down every timeout, every stop in play, every quarter break and every second of Pre-Game and Half Time to deliver the best possible “show” to our guests. Yes, I say show; while the central part of the experience is the Football Game, only 60 minutes of the three hour time Fans are with us is game action, our concentration is filling those other two hours with entertaining content.

The Pre-Game is the first area we carefully plan. We work backwards from Kickoff filling in every minute till when the gates open. Generally this consists of the team running on the field, band pregame, intro videos, Public Address Announcements, Sponsorship Elements among with a multitude of other things. Being at the Georgia Dome introduces a large amount of screen real estate to fill. Not only do we have the traditional Jumbo Screen (and I mean JUMBO), but we have eight message boards and two ribbon boards to continually keep filled with content. My job is to make sure everything flows between all of those visual elements so that we create a cohesive image.

Timeouts are also carefully scripted so that we get all of our promotions, sponsorships and messages into the game. Quarter Breaks are where we try and do the On-Field promos such as races, presentations and giveaways.. while we relegate timeouts and breaks in action for on-screen promos such as lucky seats, fan cam, trivia and other media driven features.

Half Time generally is devoted to the Band with a good portion of other features we add in to keep things flowing.

So overall the Creative Production department has A LOT of things to create to keep all that screen real estate covered during a three hour game… tomorrow I’ll take a look at exactly what all those things are and how they fit into the Game Script!

Creating the Game Day Look

Just finished a four hour Game Production Meeting with our main staff. Fleshing out all of the elements in the Game Day script is a challenge, but also a lot of fun to finally see come together! Today I’ll take a look at, well, The Look…

The first thing in gearing up production for a Game is to create “The Look”. When we say “The Look” we mean the overall theme and style of all the videos, graphics, posters and elements that will create that atmosphere at a game. Careful design and thoughts go into what the fans see and experience throughout their time with us. Our job as a department is to make sure everything that is created fits with the style we are going for this season, and on some special occasions for a single game.

When finding a look we take a wide range of options down to three themes which we then flesh out with samples of posters, videos and graphics to get a feel for what it will look like in the Georgia Dome. After review and tweaking a single look is determined as our full season image. We then take this and begin creating our signage for the dome, our Starting Lineup Videos, our Sponsor Graphics and Animations, our Crowd Prompts and our Videos. I’ll reveal the look we went with and an in-depth examination of what goes into fine tuning that look after our First Game… don’t want to ruin the surprise before the big day!

Hi All-

Sorry for the long delay in writing, this summer has been insane with traveling, work and job transitions. Yes I know I have a lot to catch you up on!

First things first, this summer I was promoted to a new position at Georgia State University as the Director of Video and Creative Services for Athletics. Having the ability to serve in this position during the inagural season of GSU Football is an absolutely incredible opportunity. My department is in charge of a multitude of things around Athletics including: Video Production, Graphic Production, Coaches Film, Jumbo Screens, Commercials, Television Shows and more. So during the next few months this blog will focus on what it takes to put on a game at the Georgia Dome from a production standpoint, how we keep thousands of fans entertained during the non-football moments, how we keep fans entertained during the week through videos, television shows and graphics, and how we bring all of this together to create a GSU Brand.

My goal is to update the blog on a daily basis as to what we are doing and what’s going on in the GSU Video and Creative Services Department. You’ll be in the know on the highs, lows, challenges and successes of my department and what all of that means for a great game day experience for the fan.

It’s Coming, and It’s Coming FAST! 18 Days till Kick Off!

For today’s update… a quick breakdown of my department –

Coaches Film – Coaches film is an extremely important part of preparing the coaches and players for a game. I have hired Chris Ball to run this arm of the department. The CF department films every GSU Football Practice and Game from high in the sky. They then cut up this video and have it on servers 24/7 for coaches and players to learn from. Expect a lot more about this department in the coming weeks!

In-Game Production – IGP is a vital part of any game day experience. We produce the videos for the Jumbo Screen including everything from the Intro Video to the ‘Touchdown” Crowd Prompts. Sprinkle that in with Starting Lineup Videos, Animated Hat Shuffles, Sponsor Elements, Half Time Films and more and you have a huge plate of things to do for the season!

Website Video Productions- WVP produces all of the content you see on the Georgia State Website and Youtube Channel. Whether it be a webisode with the Volleyball Coach, a season ticket promo with Ken Coggins, or a recap of last weeks game the Website team works hard to keep the fan up to date during the week with what’s going on at GSU Athletics.

External Video Productions- EVP produces all of the commercials, DVD’s and other media that is distributed for viewers and fans. They work hard to build the GSU Brand throughout the area and nation.

Television Production- The Television Department produces any television content concentrating on Coaches Shows and Inside Access Shows… expect a lot about this area soon!

Graphics – The Graphics Department is spread throughout Marketing ranging from Posters to Billboards. They develop the images that support the GSU brands. We have an amazing staff throughout the entire marketing department, so this area is not solely based in my department.
