Anyone driving in or around Atlanta has inevitably noticed the vast amount of roads with some form of the name Peachtree. There are 71 road names in Atlanta with Peach including Peachtree Street, Peachtree Creek Road, Peachtree Lane, Peachtree Avenue, Peachtree Circle, Peachtree Drive, Peachtree Plaza, Peachtree Way, Peachtree Memorial Drive, New Peachtree Road, Peachtree Walk, Peachtree Valley Road, West Peachtree Street, Peachtree Battle Avenue, Peachtree-Dunwoody Road and Old Peachtree Road. Some of these streets intersect with Peachtree Street, others are extensions of it, and some are nowhere near it.

So, I did a little research this afternoon to figure out exactly why there were so many Peachtree roads! One would immediately think that the reason, with Georgia being the Peach State, is that the roads have to do with the state. This was my thinking as well until today. Peachtree Street, which is the main road of Atlanta stretching from Little Five Points to Buckhead, is the “Broadway” of Atlanta. The road was in fact named after a Creek Indian settlement named Standing Pitch Tree. Apparently the name was either corrupted or sounded better in English as Peachtree. Peachtree Trail stretched from North East Georgia down the Chatahooche River to the Standing Pitch Tree settlement. Much of the current Peachtree Street follows this route, and a large portion of Old Peachtree Road follows the original trail. Over the years additions to the road, other streets intersecting it and other random roads have been named Peachtree.

So there is a brief history of Peachtree Street!
